We’re doing a deep dive this week into how to understand your story as an asset, so you can leverage it for maximum world-making ability.
So, let’s jump in!
Remember what I said before, about your story being a DYNAMIC asset?
This word -- dynamic -- is the key to leveraging your story assets.
Your story is not something you “figure out” one time, and that’s it.
That’s the fastest way to become trapped in a life you don’t want to be living.
In reality, your story is not finite, concrete, factual, or unchanging.
If you treat it as a static asset, you’ll maybe get a 1% return. Maximum.
The whole gift of story is that it’s a constantly unfolding, evolving, transformative thing.
… Over which you (and only you!) get to exercise creative license.
It may not seem so now, but you are actually living inside an infinite story -- one in which the rules of play can change at any moment.
(More on finite and infinite stories later. That’s a big one to unpack.)
For now, know that you have the ability to re-make your story -- and thus, your “reality” -- anytime you want, in a thoughtful, honest way that doesn’t require lies or self-delusion.
And while it may seem obvious that your present and future stories are capable of change…
It’s your stories about the PAST that determine the scope of change that’s possible for you in the future.
So in a way, authentically leveraging your assets for the future begins with taking ownership of your past.
And here is the liberating secret:
Even your PAST story is dynamic -- because we humans are perpetually capable of reflection, hindsight, insight, and breakthrough.
(Breakthroughs that can later be used to frame the way we talk about our past with others.)
Just ask Romal Tune how his story about “not being loved as a kid” went out the window after his therapist directed his attention away from his absent parents (a constant source of pain) and toward his present grandmother (an overlooked source of love).
Suddenly he realized: He’d been conducting his whole life inside a story that was factually untrue!
… And sabotaging all his romantic relationships because of it!
… For DECADES!
What FREEDOM, to finally escape that prison.
This kind of mastery over your past is possible for you, too.
More importantly, it’s something you can leverage to create the present and future that you want to live inside: one that includes more opportunity, more respect, more compassion, more money, more fulfillment...
... Which is to say, exactly the life that you want.
