"I never expected to get THIS kind of insight/ result/ value from a storytelling coach."
After you commit to investing in your story, there may come a moment when your idea of what we're doing and how it can benefit you starts to expand -- and your eyes, in tandem with blossoming awareness, start to widen -- until finally you utter these words, as a client recently did.
"It's not just about storytelling," she said to me in a rush. "It's psychology and business and strategy and a deep understanding of human motivation and..."
Or, as another client put it:
"It's like, how to be a better and more badass human being at business AND in life -- while being 100% yourself."
Such was the case with a woman who wanted to discuss her career transition and cross-country move to Austin, TX. As we were wrapping up, she requested an extra session before she left SF -- asking if we could focus on negotiation.
"Of course," I smiled. "One of my favorite topics."
At the end of that session, she looked at me through her glasses as though for the first time, and said those magic words: "I never would have imagined..."
So in her honor, and in honor of the killer deal she's about to nail using what we discussed,
I want to share with you the ONLY secret to negotiation you will ever need to know, which is:
It's not about YOU.
It's not about what you deserve, or what you've earned in the past, or where you fall in "the range" of salaries according to your research on GlassDoor.
It's not about what you need to survive the rising cost of living; it's not about what would make you feel valued; and it's certainly not about what's "fair."
Haven't you heard? Life isn't fair!
When you approach a negotiation thinking about what's in it for you, you INSTANTLY lose.
Because you're coming from a place of ego, the other person will naturally respond from a place of ego. As such, it quickly devolves into a competition to see which shrimpy little human ego can get the better deal.
